Coming from a Place of Diversity

As a student who was born and raised in a melting pot of cultures, I often get asked the question, “Where are you from?” It’s a simple question, but the answer is anything but. Where I come from is a story of diversity and identity, one that I am proud to share.

A World of Multiculturalism

I was born and raised in Toronto, Canada, a city that prides itself on its multiculturalism. Toronto is a place where you can walk down a street and hear five different languages, where black, white, and brown people all call themselves Canadians with pride. My parents immigrated to Canada from Jamaica, and it was here where they worked hard to give my siblings and me a better life than they had.

Growing up, I was immersed in a world of multiculturalism. My friends came from different backgrounds, and we celebrated each other’s traditions and cultures. Every summer, my family attended the Caribana Festival, a celebration of Caribbean culture, and we danced in the streets alongside people from all over the world.

Being surrounded by such diversity allowed me to appreciate the beauty found in every culture. I learned to respect and embrace differences, and to celebrate what makes us unique.

Challenges of Identity

While being surrounded by diversity was a blessing, it also presented certain challenges, particularly when it came to my own identity. Growing up, I often felt like I was living in two worlds. At school, I was Canadian, but at home and in my community, I was Jamaican.

I struggled to understand who I was and where I fit in. I didn’t want to choose between being Canadian or Jamaican; I wanted to be both. I felt like I had to prove myself in both communities, and it was exhausting. It wasn’t until I embraced my identity as a third-culture kid that I felt at peace. Third-culture kids are those raised in a culture other than their parents’ or the one on their passport, and it helped me understand that it’s okay to be different.

A Pride in My Diversity

Today, I am proud of where I come from. My identity as a black, female, Jamaican-Canadian is a reflection of the diversity that makes Canada great. It has taught me to respect and celebrate differences and to embrace my own identity. It has also shown me how important it is to educate others about the beauty of diversity, and to create spaces where everyone feels included.

So, to answer the question, “Where am I from?” I come from a place of diversity, a place where differences are celebrated, and a place where multiculturalism is not just a buzzword, but a way of life.
